Tefilin

There are sometimes some strange sights on an airplane when traditional Jewish men travel long distances.  In the morning, they are obligated to put on these religious  items called Tefilin.  A black box goes on the head with black straps hanging.  Another black box is placed on the arm, with the black straps going around and around the arm with the wrappings ending on the hand.  One time an airplane passenger thought the man wrapped in  Tefilin was wired to a bomb and the plane was forced to land.  Not funny. Jewish men after they reach 13 years old are commanded to wear Tefilin each morning in conjunction with their prayers.  It is indeed a strong gathering of spiritual uplifting when the group of men bring all their prayers together.  So here on this short descriptive video, some fine points are offered.  It’s just the tip of the iceberg for those who wish to learn more.  Enjoy!

Love. A Jewish Concept?

Love is all around- in just about every song and movie.  If it’s so prevalent and we are so drawn to it, why is it so elusive?  Why doesn’t it work for most people?  Traditional Jewish thought has quite a lot to say about love.  Did you realize that Jews are commanded to love? That it is number one on the Ten Commandments?  It is not so simple, but once the tradition teaches young people how to- through example, and through learning the holy texts, love is handed down from generation to generation.   The young generation needs to incorporate love into their lives.  What can we in our own societies learn about love from traditional Judaism?   A hint: love is a conscious choice.

Wine in Judaism

Everybody knows about wine.  Wine is enjoyed by people in every culture.  When used properly, it brings joy to those who imbibe. Yet where does the destructive side of wine come from?  How are so many lives lost from allowing wine to take control?  It is obviously not an easy question.  This short video brings some insight into how families have brought wine in a healthy way into their lives.  Judaism offers the combination of the physical and spiritual coming together in the drinking of wine.
